The Utrecht chair, one of Rietveld’s few realized upholstered designs, was first manufactured by Metz & Co. in Amsterdam in 1936. Characterized by its distinctive form armrests integrated into the front legs and an angled backrest forming the rear leg the chair was originally upholstered in dark brown canvas with a visible festoon stitch. Following the war, Metz & Co. revived the design, opting for a felt covering with the same characteristic white stitching.
